The slow box office trend for Hollywood continues, but for Warner Bros. and Annabelle: Creation, this was a weekend to celebrate. The horror movie, part of The Conjuring franchise, scared up a solid $35 million victory at this weekend’s box office.
The film lacked any major stars, but that was not the draw with this well reviewed film (check out our Annabelle: Creation review). It was that devilish little doll and the world that she haunts that got droves of audiences into theaters.
Coming in second place was a previous number one, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. The World War II true story scored another $11.4 million to bring its total to $153.7 million in four weeks of release. The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature landed in third place. The sequel to The Nut Job banked $8.9 in its debut frame with The Dark Tower limping along in fourth place with $7.9 million. The Stephen King adaptation has only mustered up $34.3 million in two weeks of release. Certainly a disappointing cume for Sony Pictures, that had hoped to make this a first of a series of Dark Tower movies.
Closing out the top five is The Emjoi Movie. The animated film (also from Sony) scored $6.6 million, bringing its impressive total to $63.6 million.
