The 90th Academy Awards are just around the corner and those coveted nominations were announced this morning. Predictably, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water scored big. But, could anyone have foreseen that the Cold War set fantasy/love story would garner 13 nominations?
In a move showing that history has finally caught up with the Academy, both a woman and an African American earned nods for Best Director. Joining Del Toro is Greta Gerwig, who scored for her personal and touching Lady Bird, and Jordan Peele for his directorial debut, Get Out. Get Out also received nods for Best Picture and Best Actor for Daniel Kaluuya. Lady Bird also produced its own best acting nominations with both Laurie Metcalf and lead Saoirse Ronan scoring nods for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress, respectively.
Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis read the nominations earlier this morning in a move that this writer feels was quite ironic. Each deserved nods for their respective work in 2017, Haddish for Girls Trip and Serkis for his revolutionary turn in War for the Planet of the Apes. The snubs didn’t end there. Also missing from the nomination list was a single piece of love for the blockbuster and well-reviewed Wonder Woman. Also missing was Holly Hunter for Best Supporting Actress for The Big Sick, the film also missing out on Best Picture. It did earn a nod for Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani for Best Original Screenplay.
The awards will be unveiled March 4.
