Hollywood does love itself, and that was on full display as the 89th annual Academy Awards nominations were revealed today and the Hollywood-set musical La La Land tied a record with the most nominations ever with fourteen. La La Land joined some heady company with Titanic and Ben Hur with the most nods ever.
Among the film’s bounty was a nod for Best Picture, Best Actor for Ryan Gosling, Best Actress for Emma Stone and Best Director/Best Original Screenplay for Damian Chazelle.
The biggest shock of the morning, although there were few surprises this a.m., was the lack of a nomination for Arrival star Amy Adams. Many thought she was a lock, including this outlet with its recent Oscar Watch column. She missed out on the nod, that many believe went to Meryl Streep for Florence Foster Jenkins.
Streep was joined in that category by Stone for La La Land, Natalie Portman for Jackie, Isabelle Huppert for Elle and Ruth Negga for Loving. Best Acting nods went to Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea, Denzel Washington for Fences, Gosling for La La Land, Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge and Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic.
Jimmy Kimmel is hosting the Oscars, which will be handed out on February 26.
