Well, that Dune trailer was worth the wait! First of all, anything that director Denis Villeneuve crafts, I’m there—front row, center. After his work on Prisoners, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049, he has earned that kind of cinematic respect from audiences. In what must have been his most epic undertaking yet, tackling Frank Herbert’s classic cerebral 1965 novel, appears to have brought out a whole nether level of awesomeness from the helmer.
Timothée Chalamet stars as Paul Atreides, a man fated for a role that he may or may not be ready for inhabiting. The flick features an all-star cast to bring the iconic book to life, including Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, and The Greatest Showman’s Zendaya.
The flick is premiering in December in theaters and for fans of the beloved literary classic, this is a long time coming. David Lynch helmed the 1984 version that was very much a Lynchian film. It was OK in my book. After inhaling the books, I was expecting something different. But what did 13-year-old Joel know about the cinema of Lynch? Villeneuve appears to be taking Dune on from a more straight on science fiction approach that from this teaser, appears to be an impeccable choice.
Also, the music chosen in a trailer speaks volumes as to the talent behind the entire production. It either works, or it doesn’t. There is no middle. Here, the use of Pink Floyd’s Eclipse over the building action and visual spectacle is immense and intense. Look out for teases to the score by Oscar winner Hans Zimmer.
Josh Brolin also stars as Gurney Halleck, Stellar Skarsgard is Baron Harkonnen, and Dave Bautista is Glossu Rabban.
This is a story all about power and the vacuum that is created by dwindling resources. Who commands that power, who takes that power, and eventually, who earns that power.
Look for Dune on December 18.
