The 2020 Oscar nominations have been revealed and the headline here is the comic book movie has truly conquered the world. Todd Phillips’ stunning Joker—with its Oscar nominated lead actor performance by Joaquin Phoenix—scored 11 nominations including Best Picture and Best Director for Phillips.
In a manner year for films, three others tied with an astounding 10 nominations each, including Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 1917 and The Irishman. Those three also garnered Best Director nods for their helmers, Quentin Tarantino, Sam Mendes and Martin Scorsese, respectively.
There were some shocks and surprises, such as the omission of any female directors for Best Director, such as leading candidate Greta Gerwig for Little Women—who will have to settle for a Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture nod. Also missing was a perceived front-runner in Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers. Although this writer never thought that buzz would result in an actual nod. Oh, and where’s the love for Frozen II?!
