Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Trailer Teases Trilogy End

The first (yay!) trailer for the ninth film in the Skywalker Star Wars series has landed. It even finally has a name. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has unveiled its first teaser and we are still holding our breath due to its awesomeness.

There is a line that I think encapsulates the entire feel of this film, “no one’s ever truly gone.” That could mean anything … and everything. Given the title of the film, we could also discern that Rey (Daisy Ridley) is a Skywalker. Or, it could mean that Luke is “rising” as Ben did in earlier films. Who knows? And that’s a good thing. The teaser did what a teaser should do … it left us gasping for more.

There’s also a lot to see here that should send longtime fans like myself into hyperdrive. There’s Lando (Billy Dee Williams!), there’s General Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) and then as the trailer cuts to black, a certain evil doer’s favorite color, a voice over evil laugh is heard that can only mean one thing—Palpatine is back!

Oh, and lest we forget, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is repairing his helmet and looking to keep his evil ways alive in a battle scene that spotlights his killer lightsaber.

In case you couldn’t discern it, the opening voiceover is Mark Hamill’s Luke and he is telling her, and us, that this is her fight now. That is just how we want it. She is one incredibly powerful character and the rightful heir to the Skywalker saga. Wait, does this mean she’s a Skywalker? Hmm…

The The Rise of Skywalker stars Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Williams, Fisher, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo and Billie Lourd. Making their Star Wars debut are Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Matt Smith, and Dominic Monaghan.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters December 20.
