Love & Friendship: Kate Beckinsale Shares a “Naughty” Side of Jane Austen

Kate Beckinsale cannot contain her thrill with being able to appear in a Jane Austen page to screen effort that has never been seen before, Love & Friendship. At this point, so much of the Austen library has been brought to the silver screen. Many, on multiple occasions and in many forms… including the recent Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!

We caught up with Beckinsale for an exclusive video interview where she lets us in on what it is about this author that hundreds of years after her leaving this earth, we still cannot get enough. Beckinsale also tells us why it was such a delight to play Lady Susan Vernon, a widow with a trail of wickedness that follows her. And by wicked, we truly mean wickedly funny. She is not evil, don’t get us wrong.

But, there is something truly devilishly delightful about this character. In fact, she may be our favorite Austen character yet.

Love & Friendship is based on the novella by Austen entitled Lady Susan, about a woman who seems to involve herself in the lives of all those around her, particularly her daughter, who is ready to marry… but to whom?

Beckinsale admitted in our interview that she could see Lady Susan having a ball in modern times, i.e. she was ahead of the curve when it comes to expectations of what is expected of a lady during Austen days. “She’s quite naughty,” Beckinsale said and laughed.
