Star Wars The Force Awakens Shatters Box Office Records

With as many screens as Star Wars: The Force Awakens was showing on across the country, it is hardly a surprise that it broke the record for opening weekend debut. But, it was a thought that Jurassic World’s summertime haul could stand as the most over. But after a record shattering $57 Thursday preview day debut, it looked as if our Star Wars heroes were going to march to a new weekend box office record. The question became how much would it beat Jurassic World’s $209 million single weekend haul?

Now that all the results are in, specifically, Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned $238 million and now stands at over a half a billion in global box office cume.

Here are just a few of the records that went down with the arrival of J.J. Abrams seventh Star Wars movie:

  • Biggest Thursday opening with $57 million
  • First film to post a single day over $100 million
  • Biggest Friday gross with $120.5 million
  • Biggest December debut (in fact, by three times!)

Coming in a (distant) second place was the Amy Poehler-Tina Fey comedy Sisters. It made $13.4 million. Meanwhile, the other new entry in the weekend box office sweepstakes, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip, took in $14.4 million in third place.

Fourth place belonged to Mockingjay Part 2 with another $5.4 million and Creed continued to keep on punching in fifth place with $5.1 million.
