My Spy Video Q&A with Chloe Coleman: Learning From “Mentor” Dave Bautista

As soon as that first My Spy trailer landed, the spotlight on young star Chloe Coleman brightened. Rightfully so, given the talent that popped off the screen, even from a two-minute teaser. Coleman stars as Sophie, a tween who moves to Chicago with her mom (Parisa Fitz-Henley) after her father dies. Thing is her uncle is a bad man and the authorities have tasked a couple of CIA agents to keep an eye on the mother-daughter duo. They fear that the bad uncle may come calling.

Those CIA agents are tough guy extraordinaire JJ (Dave Bautista, Guardians of the Galaxy Part 2) and techie titan Bobbi (played by comedienne Kristen Schaal). Almost immediately, Sophie breaks JJ’s cover. Lucky for JJ and Bobbi, the kid takes a liking to them and wants JJ to teach her in the ways of spy-dom. Fearing becoming the laughing stock of the agency for having their cover broken, JJ and Bobbi agree and an adorable relationship emerges between the emotionally stunted agent and the fatherless child in search of a male role model.

My Spy Digital Round Table with Chloe Coleman from Joel Amos on Vimeo.

The Movie Mensch was tapped to join in a virtual roundtable with a few other outlets to chat with Coleman, who took us inside the making of the charming family flick. She dishes the blissful generosity of Bautista, the comedic lessons learned from Schaal and how director Peter Segal’s (Get Smart, Grudge Match) set was one that fed the young actress’ desire to explore all avenues in the filmmaking landscape. https://youtu.be/WocS589slqQ

The star of My Spy also shares some priceless insight into her feelings when it comes to audiences finally being able to see the film that she is so clearly proud of. After all, it was an early casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic when theaters closed and now has landed on Amazon Prime and Coleman, for one, is beyond excited that the streaming giant having the film allows it to be seen by legions of families in dire need of some enriching entertainment during these uncertain times.
