Back in 2017, a fun action flick hit screens by the name of The Hitman’s Bodyguard. It featured hitman Samuel L. Jackson being protected (reluctantly) by bodyguard extraordinaire Ryan Reynolds. For us, the highlight of that movie, well one of them, was how filmmakers interjected Black Betty by Ram Jam! Now, the duo is back in the sequel, but this time, it focuses on Jackson’s onscreen wife, Salma Hayek. Thus the “wife” of the title.
The big stars aren’t the only souls reprising their roles. Also returning is Michael Bryce and Darius Kincaid, Richard El Grant. Added to the cast for their first go-around are Antonio Banderas, Morgan Freeman, and Frank Grillo (recently seen in Hulu’s Boss Level.
The first film banked over $176 million globally and immediately a sequel was discussed. IT was formally announced a year later and has been pushed back almost a year due to the Coronavirus pandemic and theaters being closed.
The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard will premiere in theaters on June 16.
Here’s the official synopsis:
The world’s most lethal odd couple – bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) and hitman Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) – are back on another life-threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce is forced into action by Darius’s even more volatile wife, the infamous international con artist Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek). As Bryce is driven over the edge by his two most dangerous protectees, the trio gets in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stands between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman (Antonio Banderas). Joining in the fun and deadly mayhem is Morgan Freeman as…well, you’ll have to see.
