News of the World Trailer: Tom Hanks’ First Western

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for a national treasure’s first foray into the western milieu. Tom Hanks stars in director Paul Greengrass’ News of the World and from the looks of this first tease, this film has heaps of heart.

Hanks stars as Captain Jefferson Kyle Kid. He’s a veteran of three wars, most recently the Civil War. He is a storyteller who goes from town to town reading the paper and sharing stories from across the globe. Things get personal for Kid when he comes across a lost 10-year-old girl (Helena Zengel), who had been raised by the Kiowa people as one of their own. Hanks’ character agrees to take the girl back to her biological kin, her aunt and uncle—even though she would rather stay.

It looks like they will have their challenges, both man-made and natural, along the way of their fateful journey.

Greengrass, who previously directed Hanks in Captain Phillips (and is best known for his helming of the Bourne series), is a helmer whose stories always pack a punch, both with action and an emotive tether.

Believe it or not, Hanks has never made a western and this one looks to fit him like a glove.

Look for News of the World in theaters on Christmas Day.
