Although I have often said over the years that the Golden Globes are a worthless bellwether event, sometimes they are simply just enjoyable to watch. That was certainly the case this year. In terms of serving as a predictor of the Oscars or even who will score those coveted nominations … useless! Still, it’s nice when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) get things right—as they did tonight with their lauding of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
That love letter to Hollywood scored a Golden Globe for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, Best Screenplay (for Tarantino), and Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt. All so deserving and even though I have made it perfectly clear on numerous ScreenPicks’ weekly podcasts that the QT film is my front-runner to win Best Picture at the Oscars, I also know it means very little for its Academy Award chances that it won big at the Globes tonight.
In the dramatic category for Best Picture, the notorious organization gave its top honor to Sam Mendes’ 1917. It also scored a win for Mendes for Best Director (also much deserved).
What was fascinating to look back on with this year’s Globes is save Laura Dern for Marriage Story, not one Netflix film won anything from the HFPA. That’s puzzling and although, again, I routinely say that the Globes have nothing to do with anything, Netflix might want to look at itself in the mirror and question its awards marketing efforts. After all, this is a “studio” that had Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman in the running and everyone saying that Adam Driver was a shoe-in for Best Actor for Marriage Story. That didn’t happen.
So, who did win and for what?
