Netflix’s 6 Underground proves that given the right budget, Michael Bay can continually up the ante and push the envelope in the action genre in a way that satisfies even the most die-hard fans. In short, 6 Underground is total and complete Bayhem.
6 Underground tells the story of six people who have left their own lives behind to use their skillsets in a group effort to help create a better world…by killing bad people.
While the plot seems cliché, it gets a little more layered as the agents completely erase their personal connections and fake their own deaths to go on this mission to save the world by taking out a ruthless dictator across the globe in order to trigger a revolution to bring democracy back to a Middle-Eastern country.
The Transformers director also elected to incorporate some wide lens Go Pro action shots during some of the point-of-view sequence, which captivates audience and takes them on a ride. From the music to the bombastic explosions inside of explosions, 6 Underground is just like it’s star Ryan Reynolds says it is: “the most Michael Bay movie in the history of Michael Bay.”
At a recent press day, The Movie Mensch got to speak with Reynold’s co-star, Ben Hardy, about what it was like being a part of this multimillion-dollar action-packed project directed by the legendary helmer.
Alas, Hardy says he really enjoyed working with the “incredibly passionate” director. The 28-year-old actor recalled that he was a little intimidated from some stories he had heard about Bay, saying, “I thought he might be this six-foot tall guy.” However, Hardy quickly realized that “he’s just a guy that shoots the films he loves,” the Bohemian Rhapsody star added.
Hardy went on to piggy back on Reynolds comments on the level of Bayhem that’s portrayed in 6 Underground, saying he feels the movie is “Michael Bay on steroids.”
He then went on admit that he was that’s the reason he was pretty stoked the film was getting a theatrical release. “It’s always a question, because of Netflix,” he said about the uncertainty of steaming platform originals.
But in the end, Hardy says audiences can enjoy the Bayhem from home, too. Simply because, “Bay is so brilliant.”
The Movie Mensch then asked the rising star if he had any aspirations to work with any other noteworthy filmmakers in the future. Hardy shared that his favorite film was Charlie Kaufman’s 2008 Synecdoche, New York, and that he would love to work with Kaufman in the future simply because he’s “a fan of his work.”
We certainly hope Hardy will achieve his goal. After all, this guy could be the next Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
6 Underground is out Friday! And it’s a Bayhem of a good time.
