Emma Trailer: Anya Taylor-Joy Breathes New Life Into Jane Austen’s Iconic Character

Focus Features has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Emma, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character. Based on the beloved Jane Austen book, Emma has some company in modern cinematic storytelling, what with 1995’s Clueless being based on Austen’s beloved classic and the 1996 legendary take that starred Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma.

The 1815 novel has definitely stood the test of time and from this teaser alone, we are extremely intrigued.

Emma follows Emma Woodhouse (Taylor-Joy), a young woman living in the early 19th century who does her best to find romantic partners for her friends and family. Thing is, she is an idealist and has the best of hope for these matches. Many results in trouble that thankfully manifests as humor for the viewer. Emma is one of Austen’s more hysterical books and that potential comes through on every second of this teaser.

Emma 2019 also features a stellar cast, most notably Bill Nighy, who plays Emma’s dad, Mr. Woodhouse .Game of Thrones’ star Gemma Whelan stars as Mrs. Weston, Mia Goth is Emma’s best pal Harriet Smith, Johnny Flynn is Mr. Knightley and Josh O’Connor (from The Crown) tackles the role of Mr. Elton—the clergyman (played by Alan Cumming in the 1996 flick). Most importantly, Frank Churchill will be played by Fantastic Beasts’ Callum Turner, who winds up in the most challenging of love triangles with our titular character.

Look to fall in love with Emma all over again on February 21, 2020.
