The first trailer (revealed at Comic-Con) for Top Gun 2 has arrived! After decades of rumors and false starts, the Jerry Bruckheimer produced blockbuster is finally getting their second chapter.
Officially titled Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise returns as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. What comes through in this trailer is something that Hollywood needs to learn from … that is, the effect that adding years has on potential ebbs and flows of a story. Ed Harris’ character goes on a bit of a rant in the teaser about how Maverick is merely a Captain, and in all seriousness, by this point in his career … he should be an Admiral! He’s not wrong!
Val Kilmer returns as Iceman and gotta have some sort of love to Anthony Edwards’ character from the first, so we get astounding actor Miles Teller in the role as his son. Top Gun 2 also stars Lewis Pullman, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly and as we just stated, Harris.
The only issue I have with this teaser is it seems to be a whole heavy dose of sentimentality for a nostalgia laden generation longing for the 80s. I just hope that there aren’t too many moments that look like mirror images of the first flick. Guys singing to a somewhat embarrassed woman in a bar? Shirtless guys playing volleyball on the beach? Yup. All there.
Look for Top Gun 2 in theaters June 26, 2020.
