The first look trailer for Queen and Slim has arrived and it has immediately reserved a spot on my must-see fall movie preview.
The film is from the trailblazing writer Lena Waithe (Emmy winner for Master of None) and Melina Matsoukas—the supremely talented director who brought us Beyonce’s Formation and that powerful Nike Equality ad campaign.
The film stars the Academy Award nominated actor who led us down that dark rabbit hole in Get Out, Daniel Kaluuya). Starring opposite him is someone making quite a statement in their big screen debut, Jodie Turner-Smith. The two portray a couple on their first date in small town Ohio. Things are going OK, but not great, and then their lives are forever changed by a police traffic stop gone horribly wrong.
Fearing for their lives, the two hit the road and live life on the run. He is a retail worker and she is a criminal defense lawyer who knows the system is not set up to give him (or her as she has become drawn into this) a fair trial in any sense of the word “fair.”
While on the road, the pair discover not only everything they could possibly know about the other—now that they are a tragically brought together insta-couple—but also themselves. Universal Studios is comparing the flick and the couple at the heart of it to Bonnie and Clyde and Thelma and Louise.
Look for it in theaters this November.
