Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark: Guillermo del Toro Teases His Horror Tales

The marketing for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is so on point, it’s ridiculous. Guillermo del Toro, fresh from winning an Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture last year for The Shape of Water, returns to his spooky roots as producer. We don’t get a traditional trailer, per se, what we have are four chilling, under-15-seconds, looks at this upcoming terror trip.

The books that the film is based on have haunted readers for years and years and with del Toro wielding the producer badge, look for the film that lands in theaters August 9 to spook us silly.

The first poster was released (it is above) and features the most homicidal looking scarecrow we’ve seen—and that is saying something, given the long list of menacing scarecrows in cinematic history!

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will star Lorraine Toussaint, Gil Bellows, Dean Norris, Gabriel Rush, Michael Garza and Austin Abrams.

The film recalls a few films from my formative years and that is a good thing. Flicks like Creepshow and The Twilight Zone.

Now, when will del Toro step behind the camera and direct another chilling film, like his Crimson Peak? Hard to say…

But, for now, we’ll take his role as producer because Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark looks like a mesmerizing movie for those of us who like to be spooked!
