The Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society has announced the winners for their 2nd Annual LAOFCS Awards. The critics collective has named The Hate U Give as its Best Picture, as well as bestowing on it a total of four awards, including Best Independent Film, Best First Feature and Best Performance by an Actress 23 and Under (Elsie Fisher).
Spike Lee scored a victory for Best Male Director for his work on BlackkKlansman, while Lynne Ramsey scored the Best Female Director award for her stunning effort You Were Never Really Here. Best Actor goes to one who has a special place in this writer’s heart—Rami Malek for his searing turn as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Best Actress goes to Toni Collette for her commanding turn in Hereditary.
Black Panther scored the Best Blockbuster award, Mission Impossible: Fallout will take home Best Action Film and Best Stunt Work. A Quiet Place deservedly scores the Best Sci-Fi/Horror category for filmmaker John Krasinski. The Favourite wins for Best Comedy and Best Cast.
Still to be revealed are the organization’s awards for Trailblazer, Acting Achievement and Directing Achievement. Those will be announced soon, in advance of the awards presentation event, January 9, 2019.
Other big winners include Fox Searchlight’s The Favourite which won two awards: Best Comedy and Best Cast. Paramount’s Mission:Impossible Fallout won Best Action Film as well as Best Stunt Work. Disney and Marvel’s record-breaking Black Panther will take home this year’s Best Blockbuster award, while John Krasinski’s smash horror hit, A Quiet Place won Best Sci-Fi/Horror.
