Hollywood’s biggest night has come and gone and the big winner was Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water. The film scored four awards, including the highest honor — Best Picture — as well as finally giving the Mexican-born director his first Oscar. The acting prizes proved to offer no shocks as everyone that was expected to win, did.

Dunkirk scored three Oscars, all in technical categories, including Editing, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing… besting our favorite Baby Driver in all three.
In other notable news, 14-time nominee Roger Deakins finally won his first Academy Award for Cinematography for his work on Blade Runner 2049. The Dolby Theater rose to its feat for a standing ovation that was much deserved.
When it came to the show itself, host Jimmy Kimmel did a fabulous job, especially balancing the need to address the sexual assault and discrimination charges that have permeated the headlines coming out of Hollywood in the last year. Presenting standouts included an army of talented and strong women that let the world know that this movement was going nowhere. In fact, that was the lasting impression coming out of this year’s ceremony. A tidal wave of change has come to the entertainment landscape and thank goodness, it will never be the same.
Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph stole the show from a presenting standpoint when the two did a comic riff that has set the internet afire with calls for the duo to be next year’s host. Time will tell, as it’s easy to think that Kimmel could be back for a third straight year. Although, it might be time for a change… albeit until they bring the late-night host back at some point. We’re sure of it.
