Oscar 2017 Winners: Moonlight Scores Huge Upset, La La La Still Wins Six

The 2017 Academy Awards are in the books and what a historic night it was, from its beginning through its highly confusing end.

First off, the show started with Justin Timberlake performing his Oscar nominated hit Can’t Fight This Feeling… a first time a song has opened the show. And it concluded with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway reading the wrong name for who won Best Picture. It was utter chaos. Turns out Beatty was handed the wrong envelope and in the nervousness that was being in front of a billion people, he saw Emma Stone for La La Land on the card. Nervously he looked at the side stage for direction and when none came, he handed the card to Dunaway who uttered the words, “La La Land.”

The place went wild as the expected winner was anointed. The only thing, Moonlight was the true winner.

After the dust had settled, the Moonlight crew took the stage and graciously accepted their award. It was a bit of a sad moment, really, as the little film that could had achieved the impossible. They were denied a historic moment in Academy history. It is one of the biggest upsets in the long legacy of the Oscars.

Other than that, it was an interesting night as La La Land led all winners with six awards, but Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival and Fences shared the Oscar love over the course of the evening.

Here are your winners… our Oscar Watch column will break it down very soon.
