The Space Between Us Exclusive: Carla Gugino Chats Her Maternal Mars Adventure

There was something truly special about the script for The Space Between Us, according to one of its stars — Carla Gugino. She was touched by its message of love and hope, all amongst the backdrop of an otherworldly science fiction adventure about a teenage boy (Asa Butterfield as Gardner) born on Mars who dreams of going to Earth to meet a girl, Tulsa (Britt Robertson), in person. This is a young woman that he’s only known via online chats and messages from hundreds of thousands of miles away.

We caught up with Gugino for an exclusive video interview to talk about her latest, and how it appears to have touched a part of her in a way that few of her films have in the past.

Her character, Mars astronaut Kendra, has been driven by her career and nothing else. One doesn’t get to be among the first to live on Mars without sacrifices — such as giving up the joys of motherhood.

Suddenly, Kendra finds herself the unplanned maternal influence over Gardner after his mother dies in childbirth on the Red Planet.

Gugino also dishes her thoughts on the title and how it could not have been more perfect, as well as her affection for her director, Peter Chelsom, whom she has dreamed of working with for years.

Look for the stunning The Space Between Us in theaters February 3.
