Snowden Trailer: Oliver Stone Tackles a Traitor Tale

The first full trailer for Oliver Stone’s Snowden has landed and the first thing that strikes us is if Joseph Gordon-Levitt isn’t considered for an Academy Award it will be a crime worse than the one that the character he’s playing has been accused of committing.

Open Road Films has released the teaser for the film that couldn’t have a better director to handle the subject matter in Stone. It also stars Shailene Woodley (Allegiant).

The thriller tells the untold story of Edward Snowden, who is now residing in Russia, fearing being charged as a traitor in the United States of America. Clearly a patriot, Snowden enrolled in the military and due to a physical injury, found himself serving his nation in a different manner… through the NSA. When he discovers that our government is spying on everyday individuals instead of just persons of interest, he takes it upon himself to expose what he perceives is a wrong and that lands him in some serious hot water. He leaks sensitive government information to the media.

Snowden is written and directed by Stone, a three-time Oscar winner whose work on Platoon and JFK are notoriously fabulous. The film is based on two Snowden books, The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man and Time of the Octopus.

As Stone has done on numerous occasions with his films, he has an all-star cast. Joining Gordon-Levitt and Woodley is Zachary Quinto (Star Trek Beyond), Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Nicolas Cage, Scott Eastwood, Timothy Olyphant, Ben Schnetzer and Joely Richardson.

Look for Snowden in theaters September 16.
