Goosebumps had just enough going for it to knock the blockbuster that is The Martian off the top spot at the box office this past weekend. The Jack Black-starring film that takes the world of R.L. Stine’s books and brings them to life scored an impressive $23.5 million debut, and given its resonance with audiences, look for that popularity to continue into a second weekend and Halloween weekend.
The Martian came “this” close to making its third run at the top spot. The Matt Damon-starring sci-fi thriller from Ridley Scott scored second with $21.5 million, bringing its total to an astounding $143.8 million.
Third place belonged to another new film, the fourth that featured Steven Spielberg behind the camera and Tom Hanks in front of it. Bridge of Spies landed in third with a respectable $15.4 million. Given its Cinemascore and high critical praise, look for the Oscar contender to keep pulling in audiences.
Fourth found Crimson Peak with a disappointing $12.9 million. And closing out the top five was another former number one picture, Hotel Transylvania 2, and its $12.3 million.
