The Martian continues to show that audiences crave smart movies about smart people. The Matt Damon-starring, Ridley Scott-directed take on Andy Weir’s blockbuster book made it two-for-two atop the box office charts and added another $37 million to its haul.
That gives The Martian $108.7 million since its release over a week ago. At this rate, it could climb to be one of the most successful movies of Damon and Scott’s careers. What else this box office success has done is helped the film’s Oscar chances. Although not outright in its influence by audience success, the Academy sure does love nominating and awarding a film that audiences also enjoy… such as Titanic, Argo and others.
Hotel Transylvania 2 continued its successful run by placing second. The Adam Sandler animated family film scared up another $20.3 million to bring its cume to $116.8 million. Although it made $15.5 million and came in third, Pan is being touted as a box office flop. The highly expensive to make film starring Hugh Jackman failed to find much in terms of folks who were interested in witnessing an origins story for the beloved Peter Pan.
Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway continued to charm audiences as The Intern came in fourth place with $8.7 million, bringing its total to $49.5 million. Closing out the top five is one of our favorite movies of the year, the drug war thriller Sicario. The Emily Blunt-starring vehicle banked $7.4 million for a total box office haul of $26.7 million.
