Universal Studios’ hot summer continued with its latest, Straight Outta Compton, taking the prize for the most popular movie in the land in the final weekend of August. The N.W.A. biopic banked another $13.2 million to bring its total earnings to $134.1 million.
This was only the latest multi-weekend topping frame for the famed studio which has had hits all summer long from Jurassic World to Minions and Trainwreck (two of those made our Top 11 movies of summer 2015!).
Second place was the out of nowhere faith-based film War Room with $11 million, followed by Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation with $8.3 million. Thus far, the fifth Mission Impossible movie has banked $170.4 million.
Fourth place found a new release, the Owen Wilson starring family thriller No Escape with $8.28 million, followed in fifth by Sinister 2 and its $4.6 million.
The bad news in terms of box office this week arrives for the Zac Efron starring We Are Your Friends. The film achieved records, and not the good kind. It opened in over 2,000 theaters and only made $1.8 million, signifying the lowest gross of any movie of that size release all year.
