Straight Outta Compton topped the box office for a second straight week, giving Universal another win in an already impressive summer for the famed studio. The biopic of the rap supergroup N.W.A. added another $27.8 million to its total of $111.48 million.
In a distant second place was a fellow repeat first place finisher, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. The Tom Cruise-starring action fest banked $11.7 million to bring its cume to $157.7 million.
One of several new films to open this week, Sinister 2, could not replicate the success of the first film in the horror series and failed to make a mark at the box office. It came in third place with $10.6 million and was followed by another new movie dud – Hitman: Agent 47 – in fourth place with $8.2 million.
Closing out the top five was Guy Ritchie’s stylish thriller The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with $7.4 million.
The other new release this week, the Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart stoner action comedy American Ultra, also stumbled as it landed in sixth place with $5.5 million.
