Mission Impossible Rogue Nation Keeps Cruising: Weekend Box Office

Tom Cruise proved unstoppable in his second week as Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation made it two-for-two in box office victories. That proved to be a disappointment for Fox as their Fantastic Four debuted to dismal reviews (check out our Fantastic Four review) and was probably hurt by that and terrible word of mouth.

Fantastic Four debuted in second place with $26.2 million and thus will likely be considered a failure. What will happen next to Marvel’s first family is anyone’s guess. Time will tell, but we suspect that Fox will do anything they can to hang onto the rights of their Marvel property.

With the first place finish, the latest Mission Impossible shot over the coveted $100 million mark. Specifically, it has banked $108.6 million.

The Gift took third place as the Joel Edgerton written-directed-and-starring thriller did the opposite of Fantastic Four. It rode a wave of good reviews and fantastic word of mouth on its way to a debut weekend of $12 million. Look for that film, that also stars Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall, to keep on chugging through August as weaker late summer fare debuts.

Fourth place found Warner Bros.’ Vacation, which added another $9.1 million to its cume of $37.3 million. Closing out the top five was Marvel’s Ant-Man with $7.8 million and a grand total of $147.4 million.
