The first trailer for Focus Features’ instant Oscar contender, Mary Queen of Scots, has arrived as well as two piercing character posters.
Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) stars as Mary Stuart, the Queen of France, who at the age of 18 returned to her native Scotland after her husband’s death.
She refused to remarry to ensure her place, and instead focused on her return home to reclaim her ancestral throne.
Thus began her legendary rivalry with her “sister,” Queen Elizabeth I. A fellow Oscar nominee in Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) portrays the British monarch. The issue here is Queen Elizabeth I ruled over both Britain and Scotland.
Cue the classic royal intrigue!
See what we mean? This thing has Oscar potential of the highest order. It doesn’t hurt that it is from revered artist Josie Rourke who directs from a script penned by former showrunner of House of Cards, Beau Willimon.
The two actresses could not be more impeccably cast and expect major cinematic fireworks of the highest order when Mary Queen of Scotts hits theaters December 7.
The ensemble is filled out by Joe Alwyn, Gemma Chan, Jack Lowden, Ismael Cordova, Brendan Coyle, Martin Compston, Ian Hart, James McArdle, Guy Pearce and David Tennant.
Watch the trailer above and tell me you don’t agree that this thing has Academy Award accolades ready to rain all over it. Witnessing this marvel of a teaser, one thing comes to mind: Chills, they’re multiplying.
