For fans of the X-Men comics, there’s been a movie on their horizon that has continually sat in the “coming soon” pile of film releases. The New Mutants, luckily for all those involved, was not a sacrifice to the Mouse House when Disney took over Fox. After all, this is a Marvel movie and those tend to do pretty well. But … that being said. This flick missed previous release dates and with the Coronavirus raging across America, it’s not surprising that Fox (i.e. Disney) would unveil a fresh trailer for Comic-Con, even if this year, it’s better known as Comic-Con@Home.
There will be a panel for the flick …
The film was shot back in 2017 by writer-director Josh Boone (The Fault in our Stars) with an impressive young cast that includes Anya Taylor-Joy (fresh off her killing it in Emma), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Alice Braga (Queen of the South), Blu Hunt (The Originals) and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why).
They portray a new batch of Mutants with a myriad of powers that come along with that designation. The Fab Five are teens and as The New Mutants commences, who are just discovering the lengths to which their power lies. That makes them a threat to the government. Therefore, it’s not surprising that we find them being reluctantly held in a secret facility where who knows what kinds of tests will be conducted. When they realize that the only way out is to believe in themselves and to band together, their power is merely scratching the surface.
The latest mutant-centric cinematic experience was supposed to be released after the enormously successful (and Oscar-nominated) Logan and last summer’s disappointment, Dark Phoenix.
Then, it got delayed. And delayed again. Then, Disney bought Fox and its fate seemed low on the concern totem pole at the Burbank based studio. The most recent release date from the studio for The New Mutants is August 28. Considering it’s mid-July and 30-plus states have surging Coronavirus infections, it seems doubtful that cinemas will be open by the end of summer (sorry, Christopher Nolan (Tenet), but it is just reality!).
What audiences can put on their calendars is the movie’s Comic-Con@Home panel that will appear online July 23 at 2 p.m. It’ll be hosted by Ira Madison III and the cast that will be there includes Boone, Williams, Taylor-Joy, Alice Braga, Heaton, and Zaga.
Who knows when the flick will see the light of day. Will Disney/Fox wait for theaters to open, perhaps next year? Or, will the studio place it on its streaming service, Disney+? Time will tell, and The Movie Mensch will keep you apprised.
