Filmed in the harshest conditions, Infinite Storm captures the true story of Pam Bales, a mountain climber who left to hike up Mt. Washington in New Hampshire one day and wound up at the peak during a major blizzard that came out of nowhere.
It is there that she discovers a disoriented man, thousands upon thousands of feet up, in shorts and sneakers, barely responsive.
She takes it upon herself to save him. Problem is that the weather is getting worse. Now, imagine filming that thrilling premise.
That was the job of Polish-born helmer Malgorzata Szumowska. She phoned The Movie Mensch for an exclusive chat about her stunning new film, working with star Naomi Watts, and how the conditions had her recalling her days as a documentary filmmaker, which she reports were priceless for preparing her for the shoot whose painstaking effort is chronicled on every frame.
She describes in detail the conditions and what it took to give justice to this incredible story and those who survived to tell the tale.
Szumowska then spoke about her future and how she loved making an English language film, especially one so personal and yes, thrilling, and how she would like to make a Polish-language film, then another American. You know, keeping it real. Well, it doesn’t get more real than what she and Naomi Watts accomplished with Infinite Storm.
The incredible film lands in theaters March 25.
