Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog (which aired on Netflix) led the pack for this year’s Oscar nominations with twelve. It scored a bevy of nods, including Best Picture, Best Director for Campion, Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch, Best Supporting Actress for Kirsten Dunst, and Best Supporting Actor for Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jesse Plemons. Right behind the western epic finds Dune with 10 nominations, and then Belfast and West Side Story each with seven.
The nominees for Best Picture include Dog, Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, and West Side Story.
Both leads in Being the Ricardos scored nods—Javier Bardem for his turn as Ricky Ricardo and Nicole Kidman for her role of Lucille Ball. Aaron Sorkin, writer-director of the biopic, failed to get a nod for either screenplay or directing.
Will Smith, in a move that was a shock to no one, scored a Best Actor nod for King Richard, and he was joined by Bardem, Cumberbatch, Andrew Garfield for tick, tick, BOOM!, and Denzel Washington for The Tragedy of Macbeth.
One of our faves, Jessie Buckley, scored a Best Support Actress nod for The Lost Daughter and was joined from that movie by Olivia Coleman who earned another nomination for Best Actress. She has to be considered the favorite.
The Oscars will air on March 27 on ABC.
