The 2021 Oscar nominations are here, and the David Fincher directed Mank scored the most nominations with ten. Next up is Sound of Metal and Minari, who each pocketed seven nods. Then each of the following earned six nominations—Nomadland, Jesus and the Black Messiah, Promising Young Woman, and The Trial of the Chicago 7.
It’s an interesting list, most notably how so many were debuted on streaming services. Not surprising in 2020-2021, given the pandemic and how theaters were closed, and we were all forced inside. It’s a fair list of Best Picture nods, except a few notable missing films—most notably Spike Lee’s stellar Da 5 Bloods. But more on that in our Oscar Watch Snubs and Surprises article, which is coming later, along with detailed analysis you can only get here at The Movie Mensch.
