All the effort that went into bringing fans a sequel to 2013’s Frozen was documented. That chronicle of the simultaneously stressful and seismically creative comes to Disney’s streaming app for an 8-episode series, Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2.
Disney Animation possesses a proud history of Oscar-winning greatness and work that has pushed the milieu’s envelope over the decades since its founding by Walt and his Nine Old Men. Historians and filmmakers over at Disney could not have chosen a better project than Frozen 2 to showcase the heart and soul that goes into making a Disney Animation flick. That was especially resonant with the sequel to Frozen because that Idina Menzel, Josh Gad and Kristen Bell starring instant classic could not have had more of a fanbase laden with otherworldly expectations.
There’s stress… and then there’s creating a follow-up to Frozen stress!
Filmmaker Megan Harding was given incredible access and the triumph that was Frozen 2 comes through with her doc that will air on Disney+ starting on June 26. All the episodes will be released at once—you think fans will binge-watch? Probably just a wee bit!
What comes through on this first trailer is the weight that all involved felt to deliver something extraordinary from a story point of view, from an animation point of view, from a songwriting point of view—across the board, the pressure was real.
Gad (who voices Olaf the Snowman) is quoted in the trailer and paints quite a picture, impeccably encapsulating what everyone working on Frozen 2 felt. “The challenge is carrying on what people fell in love with in the first movie,” he said. Also appearing in the doc series is Menzel, Jonathan Groff (Kristoff), Sterling K. Brown and award-winning songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Chris Buck, co-creator and director appears in the trailer too, and his comments about “balls in the air” is also spot-on.
Can’t wait to head Into the Unknown Making Frozen 2.
