The trailer for the Tom Hanks true story Greyhound is a thrill-a-minute. I couldn’t wait to see the film on the big screen this summer, yet fate had other plans. With the Coronavirus still rearing its head, and the opening of movie theaters still very much in question, the producers behind Hanks’ latest film (which he also co-wrote) decided to go home … Apple-TV+.
The flick was originally supposed to arrive on the big screen over Father’s Day. Now, Hanks fans, World War II fans, and movie fans of all sizes can catch it in the comfort of their (Lord willing) Covid-19 free homes.
The $70 million that Apple paid for the flick is huge. But it is firmly an investment. After all, this is a burgeoning streaming service and they just scored one of the biggest and most beloved movie stars in the world for an original movie landing directly on their platform.
Greyhound stars Hanks as a first time US Navy Commander whose boat is heading across the Atlantic in the days leading up to when America would get in full time in World War II. His ship, Greyhound, is leading the charge to bring munitions, rations, and materials to an on-their-heels British-French-Russian effort to stall Hitler and slow down his war machine. The journey is a perilous one. Dangers lurk around every crashing wave. There are German U-boats and subs just waiting, like a snake in the grass, to strike and completely ruin everyone onboards’ day.
It also stars Elisabeth Shue, Stephen Graham, and Rob Morgan. Look for it on AppleTV+ on June 12.
