The longtime gestating biopic of Al Capone from Chronicle director Josh Trank finally has a release date, distributor and a new name! Capone finds Tom Hardy in the title role and explores a part of the legendary gangster’s life that has largely been un-chronicled. Pun, intended.
Capone follows an older organized crime figure, who is dealing with onset dementia and reflecting on his past that is laden by crime, violence and death. Not only did the title get revealed—it used to be Fonzo, and now it’s Capone—but the first trailer has landed too.
It’s gritty and uneven, to put it mildly. The other thing that is distracting is the makeup used on Hardy. But hopefully that is something digital effects can fix as the film’s release date inches closer.
The flick also stars Matt Dillon, Kyle MacLachlan and Linda Cardellini. Now, we have a lot of faith in Hardy, he is easily one of the most talented thespians of his generation. We also have a soft spot for Trank’s work on Chronicle. Since then, his track record has not been so great. Hello, Fantastic Four—but in his defense, the studio (Fox) tinkered with the film before its release.
Look for Capone on digital formats on May 12.
