First Images from Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune Drop!

The first visuals from the highly anticipated Dune, from filmmaker extraordinaire Denis Villeneuve, has landed online over at Vanity Fair. They. Look. Stunning!

First of all, what a cast! The new Dune stars Timothée Chalamet (in the lead role as Paul Atreides), with the always awesome Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica Atreides. Star Wars’ Poe,  Oscar Issac, is Duke Leto Atreides. Javier Bardem stars as Stilgar, while Zendaya (The Greatest Showman) is Chani, Stellan Skarsgard is Baron Vladimir, Dave Bautista stars as Glossu Rabban, Charlotte Rampling was tapped to portray Gesserit. Lastly, Josh Brolin was tapped to bring Gurney Halleck to life and Jason Momoa (Aquaman) is Duncan Idaho.

Dune first arrived on the public consciousness in 1965 in Frank Herbert’s iconic book. In 1984, fans got a film from David Lynch that has become a cult classic, even if it wasn’t wholly embraced upon its release by critics.

Villeneuve is a stunning filmmaker, his work on Prisoners and Arrival is nothing short of brilliant. Having him at the helm of a visual spectacular tale with a cast that will easily be considered one of the best of the year has us beyond excited for the film’s release.

For newbies to the world of Dune, Herbert’s tale takes place in the distant future and chronicles a prince (Chalamet), as he does his best to triumph over a myriad of entities that seek to control his planet’s most valuable commodity, called Melange. It increases mental aptitudes, allows for space travel and most importantly to many who want the substance—it extends the lifespan.

Dune—as of now—is set to be released December 18. With the Coronavirus, who knows if that will happen. But … here’s hoping.
