Minions: The Rise of Gru Teaser Teases Second Minion Movie

Amongst the big budget action flicks that dominated the Super Bowl trailers, a surprise arrival grabbed the attention of the younger set. Of course, those of us who are of a certain age were also quite moved by the out-of-the-blue teaser for some of our favorite animated souls—the Minions. Yup, Minions: The Rise of Gru teaser landed during the biggest football game of the year between the eventually victorious Kansas City Chiefs and the legendary San Francisco 49ers.

The Movie Mensch knew that a second Minions movie was coming our way this summer, but never in a million years did I expect to get our first look at the highly anticipated sequel during the Super Bowl.

The spot features a hodge-podge of images that out of context make absolutely no sense, but they sure made us LOL. The spot from Universal and Illumination served as a tease (it so did its job!) for the full trailer that is promised to land online on Wednesday the Fifth of February.

The first Minions movie served as an origins story for our favorite … well, minions. This was all PG, i.e. pre-Gru. The star they attached their passion for evil to was portrayed by Sandra Bullock. Her Scarlet Overkill may have failed in her mission to become the Queen of England, but as the end of the flick was playing out, we did get a glimpse of a young Gru (voiced by Steve Carell). I remember thinking to myself, “Man, I hope the sequel dives into those early days of Gru and those yellow, pill-shaped devotees of baddies.” Looks like that is exactly what we are going to get.

Minions: The Rise of Gru features the untold story of a wickedly smart and electrically evil 12-year-old who wants nothing more than to grow up to become the world’s greatest, baddest and best supervillain.

Look for Gru and his Minions to return July 3.
