One must salute Blumhouse for all it has done in the movie making realm. For those who do not know, they are a specialty studio (that is steadily branching out into Oscar fare, such as Whiplash) that brings low(er) budget horror films to life that (mostly) turn a huge profit. They brought back Halloween to triumphant heights—both critically and at the box office—and that is just one example. Their latest foray, arriving in theaters on Valentine’s Day, is one of their riskier endeavors. But I would never bet against Jason Blum and his stellar team.
Remember that somewhat cheesy ABC drama, Fantasy Island? It featured a rotating cast of guest stars who visit this island and have their fantasies played out in any way required. Leave it to Blumhouse to bring that iconic television series to the big screen and make it uniquely Blum-ian! The final trailer for Fantasy Island is here and it looks to be a tropically devilish good time.
The television series featured the host of the Island, Mr. Roarke (played by legend Ricardo Montalban), and his sidekick named Tattoo (Hervé Villechaize). Stepping into that fashion forward white suit of Roarke’s on the big screen is one of our favorite actors, the always awesome Michael Peña.
What was always striking about the television incarnation of this story idea is that all these wish fulfillments come with a cost. That is certainly the case in the screen version, judging by the above trailer.
Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island also stars Maggie Q, Lucy Hale, Parisa Fitz-Henley, Jimmy O. Yang, Portia Doubleday, Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Austin Stowell.
Fantasy Island’s official synopsis:
In Blumhouse’s new spin on Fantasy Island, the enigmatic Mr. Roarke makes the secret dreams of his lucky guests come true at a luxurious but remote tropical resort. But when the fantasies turn into nightmares, the guests have to solve the island’s mystery in order to escape with their lives.
