Netflix has unleashed the first trailer for the latest collaboration between superstar Mark Wahlberg and actor-turned-director extraordinaire Peter Berg. After their rich collaborations Lone Survivor, Patriots Day and Mile 22, their flick Spenser Confidential will premiere on Netflix on March 6.
Hey, Michael Bay took his Bayhem to the streaming giant with 6 Underground to smashing success … which I believe has opened the flood gates for Netflix to be a viable option for any filmmaker who chooses to use it. Martin Scorsese utilized the streaming service with his The Irishman and that flick went on to earn 10 Oscar nominations. Things have changed, people, and it looks like it is here to stay.
So, back to Spenser … the action-comedy finds Wahlberg playing the titular character. He’s a guy who is fresh out of prison and decides that Beantown is not for him anymore and it’s time for a geographical change to accompany his personal life change. See, Spenser is an ex-cop who pushed the limits while employed by the Boston PD—after all, as we mentioned, he did just get out of prison. Things get complicated when two of his former cohorts are murdered. Deciding to take justice into his own hands, he enlists the help of a fighter simply named Hawk (the always awesome Winston Duke). Also, he brings along his ex-girlfriend, Cissy (Iliza Shlesinger). Alan Arkin also stars as the ex-cop’s former boxing coach, with Marc Maron and Post Malone filling out the ensemble.
This thing has a lot of potential. Wahlberg slays in the action comedy milieu, just look at what he achieved with The Other Guys!
