The trailer for The Good Liar is here and if after watching it, the film doesn’t land on your fall must-see movie list, perhaps you should watch it again!
Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen star as a pair of older souls who have found each other through online dating. As we quickly learn, McKellen is a con man and he makes it pretty clear that he has one thing on his mind when courting Mirren—her worth of three million pounds. What this latest trailer does, which was missing from the first one, is hint at the idea that Mirren might actually be playing McKellen.
Now, I’m seriously intrigued. Plus, watching these two acting icons go toe-to-toe should be an acting master class of the highest order.
McKellen is Roy Courtnay and Mirren is the wealthy widow, Betty McLeish. As the latter becomes more and more open to a loving relationship with the former, Roy actually starts to develop feelings for her. Even if you’ve seen only one con man (or woman!) movie in your life, you have to know that this is where it gets thorny. There is no room for feelings on a con!
If the two names above the title on the poster (and the subject matter) don’t fully enthrall you, then just look at who is directing, and this is an absolute must-see. Bill Condon is the guy who gave us just a few Oscar winners and beloved flicks—from Chicago to Dreamgirls and the live action Beauty and the Beast.
The film also features thespians Russell Tovey and Jim Carter (Downton Abbey) in the film that arrives in theaters on November 15.
