Universal has unveiled the first look at the Fast and Furious franchise’s first spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s sworn nemeses must join forces to stop a super-baddie or the world could call it a day.
If you get the sense of this flick that it is less of a Fast and Furious type of film and more of a The Nice Guys or Lethal Weapon-grounded film, you would not be far off. Sure, there are fast cars and action sequences meant to push the envelope. But I don’t see any street racing playing a part in saving the world in this one—which is a good thing, given the two protagonists that carry the film’s moniker.
Deadpool 2 helmer David Leitch is directing and Vanessa Kirby also stars—portraying Shaw’s (Statham) sister. The Sexiest Man Alive 2018, Idris Elba, is our baddie. Now, is it me, or does Elba’s character seem a tad out of place in the Fast and Furious world? I mean, this is a series that has always pushed the envelope of action, but it has at least been grounded in some sort of reality. Elba’s baddie is right out of a comic book, but we will reserve full judgement until we see the entire film when it hits theaters August 2.
