After an unpredictable lead-up, the Oscars have finally revealed who will be going to Hollywood’s biggest night. Roma and The Favourite lead all nominees with 10 each. For the former, it is a huge win for Netflix as it is the first true Best Picture nomination for the streaming service in its history. They’ve come a long way from those red envelopes!
In a bit of history, Marvel’s Black Panther scored a nod for Best Picture. That makes it the first comic book movie to earn such an honor. It fielded seven nominations total, mostly technical categories such as Best Costume Design and Best Score. Also scoring a nod for the comic book movie is Kendrick Lamar, who earned a nod for Best Original Song.
A Star is Born scored seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Lady Gaga, Best Supporting Actor for Sam Elliott (his first nod!) and Best Actor for Bradley Cooper. Although Gaga got two nods (one also for Best Original Song for Shallow), Cooper did not get a double dose. He failed to score a Best Director nod for his debut helming effort. That could easily be seen as a huge snub.
Green Book also did well, earning five nods, including Best Picture. It did not get a nod for Peter Farrelly for Best Director, although no one considers that a snub per se. Another surprise for me came in the Best Documentary category with the absence of the most popular doc of the entire year, the Fred Rogers stunner Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
Another joy for Netflix was the handful of nods for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a film that was on nobody’s radar for earning some Academy love.
More thoughts on snubs and surprises in a bit… until then… here are the nominees.
