Disney and Pixar have unleashed a teaser trailer for their highly anticipated Toy Story 4.
What we know so far about this fourth installment in the Toy Story series is that Andy has given his toys to little Bonnie. It is a moment to treasure for our favorite toys. Reminiscent of Pixar’s passion for making films that chronicle the passing of time and forward movement the age, this film takes it a step further. For every door that closes, another opens. Toy Story 3 was thought to be the end. But it was simply the end of the toys’ life with Andy, not their end. Makes perfect sense. A toy lives on in someone else’s heart (and room!).
What our toys encounter is something unique in Bonnie’s room. It’s Forky, a hand-made craft toy that doesn’t feel like it quite fits in with the rest of the toys and frankly, the rest of the toys are not sure what to make of Forky!
Tony Hale (of Arrested Development and Veep fame) tackles the voice duties of Forky.
Toy Story 4 comes to us from Inside Out co-scribe Josh Cooley, who will be making his directorial debut with the high-profile film (no pressure, huh?). The script was penned by Stephany Folsom.
In the press release for the teaser, Cooley shared the origins of this story…
Woody and the rest of the toys are back for an all-new adventure in Toy Story 4, welcoming new friends to Bonnie’s room, including a reluctant new toy called Forky. “Like most people, I assumed that Toy Story 3 was the end of the story,” said director Josh Cooley. “And it was the end of Woody’s story with Andy. But just like in life, every ending is a new beginning. Woody now being in a new room, with new toys, and a new kid, was something we have never seen before. The questions of what that would be like became the beginning of an entertaining story worth exploring.”
The film’s broader themes, which are ever present in a Toy Story film are explained further by Cooley.
“The world of Toy Story is built upon the idea that everything in the world has a purpose,” said Cooley. “A toy’s purpose is to be there for its child. But what about toys that are made out of other objects? Forky is a toy that Bonnie made out of a disposable spork, so he’s facing a crisis. He wants to fulfill his purpose as a spork, but now has a new toy purpose thrust upon him.”
Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Estelle Harris, Walladce Shawn, Blake Clark, Jeff Pidgeon and John Ratzenberger are all back in the film that lands in theaters June 21, 2019.
