Telluride Film Festival fave, The Favourite, has released its first trailer. Fox Searchlight presents the period piece/dark comedy from The Lobster filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos. It stars Emma Stone as Abigail and Rachel Weisz as Lady Sarah, a pair of women who vie for the attention of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman).
The story takes place in 18th century England. Queen Anne is of not good health, neither physical or mental, and is quite dependent on Lady Sarah to help her with affairs of state and even the managing of her kingdom itself.
Things get interesting when Abigail shows up at the royal residence seeking a job. Using her charms, she finds herself in the favor of the queen, and that does not sit well with Lady Sarah.
As he did with The Lobster, look for Lanthimos to mix in a serious landscape with an ultra-dark comedy tonal palette that will add up to something completely fetchingly brilliant. With a cast like this, expect nothing less.
The Favourite lands in select theaters on November 23 (to qualify for awards season) and then slowly rolling out to the world in January.
