That first Venom teaser, I suppose, did just that… teased. It introduced us to Tom Hardy’s anti-hero and why it is that he became the title character. But, it did little else and anticipation for the film faltered.
Given that Sony is just coming off the success of their highest grossing film of all-time, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, let’s just say that we should not question the motives of the marketing department at the fabled studio.
Why?
Just watch this first full-length Venom trailer and notice how the anticipation meter will shoot through the roof.
Venom is based on the Marvel Comics character and features Hardy returning to the comic book genre he so triumphantly first appeared in as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.
This time he is once again a villain, yes, as most comic book fans will tell you he and Spider-Man are not the best of friends. Yet, this is a stand-alone Venom movie, so we are left wondering how do you do a villain origins movie without the hero he is destined to meet?
Guess we will see when Venom hits theaters October 5.
There are numerous things going for this release, not the least of which is the supreme talent of the lead. Hardy, we would watch in anything. Also, the director is Ruben Fleischer, who gave us Zombieland. OK, we’re listening and yes… intrigued.
The cast is filled out by Oscar nominee Michelle Williams, Reid Scott, Scott Haze and Riz Ahmed.
Anyone else find it kind of interesting that the Venom trailer premiered at the same time as Avengers: Infinity War was making its eagerly awaited arrival on screens?
