Deadpool Blu-Ray Review: Ryan Reynolds Comes Home

Deadpool landed on the big screen in February and broke records and endeared himself to millions who loved the hybrid action-comedy-superhero flick that gave star Ryan Reynolds the role he was born to play.

Now, Deadpool is out on DVD and Blu-Ray and it is loaded with extras that are as witty and fall-to-the-floor hilarious as the movie itself. And yes, that fourth wall is going to be blown away throughout the film and ever-present in all those bonus features.

Reynolds stars as Wade, a man who is a contractor – to put it mildly – who goes out into the world and rights wrongs for people who are on the wrong side of the law. When he meets the girl of his dreams Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Wade thinks he has got it all. Then, doctors discover cancer in his body and it is too late to do anything. Wade will do, and it’s probably going to be soon.

Before too long, a couple of guys show up and promise that they can cure him. With no other recourse, he thinks, he agrees and before we know it… Wade has entered a new form of hell that transforms him into a man who not only is cancer-free, but seriously disfigured… oh, and can’t die. Now, he is Deadpool and he will extol his revenge on those that did this to him. And in the process, loads of jaw-dropping action and hilarity will ensue for the audience.

Clearly, from our theatrical Deadpool review, The Movie Mensch absolutely adored this film and cannot recommend bringing it home on DVD and Blu-Ray to add to your collection. Plus, these bonus features are amazeballs!

From Comics to Screen. . .to Screen is a brilliant set of five featurettes that take the viewer deeper into the making of Deadpool. From the first comics that Deadpool appeared in to all that went into bringing Reynolds’ character to life in brilliant Technicolor, From Comics to Screen… to Screen is sensational. The backstory exploration piece is especially fascinating for those of us who weren’t Deadpool comic book fans. Going back to the origins of the character on the page allows us a deeper appreciation of him in the film itself and further shows that all involved in the film hit a grand slam in bringing Mr. Pool to life.

You don’t want to miss the special effects portion of that bonus feature either… think you know how they did that? Think again!

How often does a superhero movie have a gag reel? One can imagine that the Deadpool gag reel is wall-to-wall hilarity. And that is putting it mildly. It’s fascinating to see how far the actors were willing to push the envelope in improve and how that resulted in some scenes being completely ruined because the cast and crew busted out in laughter. We always knew that TJ Miller was a pro, but after witnessing him in the gag reel, you’ll want to go back to the film itself and realized how restrained he actually was!

We don’t want to give anything away, but let’s just say that Deadpool’s Fun Sack is one of the most entertaining bonus featurettes we’ve ever seen. That’s all…

Director Tim Miller could not have been a better choice to helm this film and that is why we have to recommend future viewings at home of Deadpool include his Audio Commentary track. He takes you inside the filmmaking process and provides not only his thoughts into why each scene turned out the way it did, but his decision making process and Miller’s remarkable creative and collaborative nature with his actors. It’s easy to see why Deadpool has become an instant classic.
