Star Wars: The Force Awakens Wins Box Office For Fourth Straight Week

Although competition was stiff from Fox’s The Revenant, the Force remained strong with Star Wars: The Force Awakens as it won its fourth straight box office title. Not only did it pass Avatar as the top grossing domestic film of all-time, but now that it has opened in China, it is beginning its march towards topping that title on the international box office list.

Thus far, the seventh Star Wars movie has banked $812 million in the U.S. since its December 18 debut. That is astounding. We will likely never see the speed with which this film amassed its fortune for some time… well, actually until Star Wars: Episode VIII comes out!

The J.J. Abrams film faced its stiffing competition yet from the Leonardo DiCaprio starring (and Golden Globe winning) The Revenant. The survival-vengeance tale earned $38 million in its first week. That’s some pretty impressive stuff for a R-rated film in January.

Third place belonged to Daddy’s Home. The Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg reunion comedy earned $13 million, to bring its cume to $116.3 million. Think we’ll get a third pairing of these two? Let’s hope so!

Fourth place belonged to the other new entry this week, the horror flick The Forest. The Natalie Dormer starring vehicle earned $13.1 million and closing out the top five is the film that dared to go head-to-head with Star Wars on its release date a month ago, Sisters. The Amy Poehler-Tina Fey starring comedy banked $7.2 million to bring its total to $74.8 million.
