The first trailer for what appears to be one of the upcoming summer’s most powerful films has arrived. Matthew McConaughey stars in the astounding Civil War true story, Free State of Jones.
The movie is directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Pleasantville, Seabiscuit) – who also wrote the screenplay.
The film, that has Oscar potential written all over it, stars McConaughey as a Confederate soldier who leaves his post fighting the North when he sees the hypocricy of the fight ahead of him. He, rightfully, believes that good southerners are fighting and dying so that rich southern landowners can get richer. When he deserts, he hooks up with a group of others who feel the same way and their families, as well as a group of escaped slaves and they try to form a community that takes on the title moniker. This doesn’t sit so well with the rebel powers that be.
Free State of Jones also stars Keri Russell and Mahershala Ali. Look for it May 13.
