Star Wars: The Force Awakens has passed Avatar to become the highest grossing film in U.S history in a lightspeed amount of time.
With the Tuesday sales expected to be $8 million, the seventh Star Wars film will add to its already astronomical domestic totals of $758.2 million to go over the $760.5 million that Avatar earned during its run.
What about globally? Well, the J.J. Abrams directed blockbuster has earned a total of $1.557 billion, making it the number four movie of all time internationally. We suspect that The Force Awakens might not become the biggest grossing film of all time, worldwide. Although, it hasn’t even opened yet in China, one of the largest countries in the world. It lands in that country on January 9.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens still has a ways to go before it can topple Avatar’s global record. But, with that China market hitting this Friday, it is possible that Avatar’s $2.78 billion could get passed.
