Given the success that Screen Gems has had with thrillers that have African American leads (like Obsessed with Idris Elba and No Good Deed with Elba and Taraji P. Henson), no one should be surprised that the Sony Pictures studio scored another hit with The Perfect Guy.
What was slightly surprising was how the movie that stars Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut made over $26 million in its first weekend. Predictions had the film banking $20 million and a victory, so that extra $6 million is icing on the cake for Screen Gems.
M. Night Shyamalan’s return to form (check out our The Visit review) just missed the top spot by a few hundred thousand. It landed in second with $25.6 million and a strong announcement from audiences that they’re ready for more from the filmmaker who gave us The Sixth Sense and Signs.
War Room landed in third place with $7.4 million, the Robert Redford-Nick Nolte yarn A Walk in the Woods took fourth with $4.6 million and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation closed out the top five with $4.2 million.
